First the definition of 73 is \u201cgood day\u201d or \u201cgood luck\u201d. It also means \u201csincerely\u201d or \u201cRegards\u201d such as one would use in ending a letter.<\/strong><\/p>\nSo — way back when – telegraph operators used the 73 to end conversations with those meanings instead of typing them out in morse code.<\/p>\n
According to the article on Page 78 of the November 2017 QST Magazine —<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Numerical Code 73 also predates radio and was a part of theWestern Union \u201c92 Code\u201d which was established in 1859 as a way to improve telegraphic throughput by allowing the use of two-digit codes in place of common phrases.<\/em><\/p>\nThe code started with 01 (wait a minute)<\/em><\/p>\nand ended with 92 (deliver promptly)<\/em><\/p>\nIn addition to 73 (best regards)<\/em><\/p>\nand 88 (love and kisses)<\/em><\/p>\nwas 30 (no more \/ the end) which is still in use by journalists at the end of articles.<\/em><\/p>\nOther companies — especially railroads, often had their own version of the code including company specific terms\u201d<\/em><\/p>\nbut 73 originated as part of the Western Union 92 code established in 1859 to help speed things up with Telegraph Messages.<\/em><\/p>\nAnd while we are on the subject of ORIGINS of terms —<\/p>\n

What about the Origins of CQ<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
The definition of CQ is \u201ccalling any station\u201d<\/strong>. and It is an invitation for any operators listening on that frequency to respond.<\/p>\nbut how did this definition come about? you ask<\/p>\n
well — this information — was also basically gleaned from page 76 of the November 2017 QST magazine — and from Wikipedia<\/p>\n
The question posed to Joe Hallas in his column \u201cThe Doctor is in\u201d in that QST Magazine was:<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat are the meanings or origins of CQ and 73. Is CQ any kind of abbreviation? And Why 73 versus any other number. I know they originated during the age of telegraphy, but how did thees commonly used terms come about? \u201c<\/em><\/p>\nSo that was the question.<\/p>\n
Now here is the answer from Joe Hallas —- (not the entire answer by Joe Hallas– but the key parts)<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2026 The CQ call was originally used by landline telegraph operators in the United Kingdom<\/p>\n
French was and still is the official language of international postal services (and until recently the postal services of most European countries were also responsible for telecommunications)<\/p>\n
and the french word SECURITIE<\/strong> was used to mean \u201csafety\u201d or \u201cpay attention\u201d.<\/p>\nIt is still used in this sense in international telecommunications.<\/p>\n
The letters CQ<\/strong> when pronounced in French — resemble the first two syllables of SECURITE<\/strong>. and were therefore used as shorthand for the word.<\/p>\nIt also sounds like the French \u201cc \u2019est qui\u201d<\/strong> which in English means \u201cwho\u2019s there\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\nIn English speaking countries, the origin of the abbreviation was popularly changed to the phrase \u201cSEEK YOU\u201d<\/strong> \u201c<\/p>\nand now you know the story about CQ<\/p>\n

since we have been mentioning QST a lot —<\/p>\n
in addition to its special meaning which is<\/p>\n
\u201cCalling All Amateur Radio Operators\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nQST is also the name of the Magazine that ARRL publishes monthly — and to which you should be subscribing.<\/p>\n
